Tell me the last player to come through the NBA that you would compare closest to Scottie Pippen? Exactly, I didn’t think you could think of anyone… Well, according to 2011 NBA Draft Prospect Chris Singleton (@C_Sing31), that’s exactly who he compares his game to. Arguably being the most versatile player in this year’s draft, Chris is confident and determined to make an immediate impact for whatever team picks him!

This past year, the former Florida State Seminole suffered a fractured foot injury right in the middle of the season, which looked like would bring the remainder to an end. With the talks of having to have surgery, Chris almost could guarantee he wouldn’t be coming back in the season. Out of curiosity, I asked him if he ever had thoughts of entering into the NBA Draft prior to his injury, he humbly said “I really didn’t think about it that much because I really felt that FSU had a chance to go far in the tournament. That was my main concern at the time.” However, as weeks went by, Chris’ foot rapidly began healing. He then found out that he no longer needed to have surgery and could possibly return for the NCAA Tournament at the end of the year. I asked Chris what were the thoughts that went through his head when he fractured his foot and found out he could potentially need to have surgery, he said, “I couldn’t believe it… I never expected to be hurt and it was the LAST thing on my mind. I found out I needed surgery like right after the game and it was either, try to come back or wait it out for like 7 months for a natural recovery and I wanted to try and come back because I was the leader of the team and I had to fight for them.” And sure enough the next thing you know, Chris was back on the court with his team for the NCAA Tournament. Although the Noles fell short this past season to VCU, Chris accomplished what he set himself out for; get back on the court and help his team!

After the season concluded, it was decision time for Chris; Stay or Go? Despite his injury, Chris had made a 100% full recovery and decided to hire an agent and enter into the NBA Draft. I asked Chris how does it feel to overcome everything from this past season and now be in the position that he currently is (potential lottery pick in the draft), and he said “It’s something worth talking about, but this is only a part of what I have in store for my life. I am going to keep working and grinding to make sure I am better than the spot (number) I am selected at. I have come a long way, and with me getting hurt, it has opened my eyes to the fact that you never know when it’s your turn”.

The thing many people don’t know about Chris Singleton is all of the criticism he has taken in. From being told that he wasn’t strong enough, to being told he cannot score, as time goes on, it seems like more and more critics have something to say. But from knowing Chris and how he personally reacts to critics; that has only pushed and helped him become who he is along the way. I asked him what he thought separated himself from everyone else in the draft and he confidently said “I believe my versatility, my willingness to succeed and my unselfishness for the team. I believe I am a winner and I am willing to do whatever it takes for us (future team) to be that once I get drafted”. Following that question I then asked him what some of his goals entering into his rookie season were and he simply stated, “I want to try and win the Rookie of the Year, and I want to make sure our team does better than the year before.” Those might sound like BOLD statements to you, but they sound like confident goals that are in the near future of Chris Singleton!

The REAL Jordan Hamilton

Just coming off of setting the NBA Draft Tour record for most 3’s made, I think it’s safe to say that Jordan Hamilton is arguably the best shooter in this year’s NBA Draft. On June 19^th, during his Utah Jazz workout, Jordan Hamilton broke the record for most 3’s made, previously held by Jimmer Fredette. Jimmer hit 40 out of 50, Jordan hit 42 out of 50! You tell me another draft prospect that can shoot 84% from the 3!

Coming off of a spectacular sophomore season at the University of Texas, Jordan has been ready to make a name in the league for awhile. I asked him what was the hardest part about leaving Texas; he said “The food.. I love the food there, and the fans were great! Even though UT is a football school, the basketball team gets a lot of love there. Coach Barnes also taught me a lot on and off the court. He helped make me a better man, as well as a better Christian, which he is himself.” Although Jordan is no longer playing at UT, he will forever be a longhorn at heart. Being surrounded by good people is nothing new for him. He has 4 siblings who have all played a major role in his life. His oldest brother (Zelle, 34) is working and raising a family of his own, his older sister (Miya, 29) is now in nursing school, his 26 year old brother (Gary) is currently playing in Japan, who is also his workout buddy when they are together. And last but not least, Jordan has two younger brothers (Isaac, 16 and Daniel, 15) that he said are, “going to be REALLY good! They both will pretty much be able to go just about anywhere they want.”

Outside of basketball, there are a few things that many of you may not know about Jordan. He LOVES fashion. He truly enjoys putting together everything in his wardrobe and dressing up and looking nice. Fashion has always been a part of Jordan and it is something that he would love to continue if he is able to do so. I asked him if he could possibly see himself starting up a clothing line in the future and he said “I would love to be introduced to people in the fashion industry; my personal manager Dilla, has a lot of connections in the hip-hop and entertainment industry and would love to possibly start up a clothing line somewhere in the future.”

The one thing that really stuck out to me as I was talking to Jordan was when I asked him what his goals were for his rookie season. He started off by telling me “most guys get ready for the draft… I’m getting ready for the NBA! It doesn’t stop after June 23^rd; some guys live for the moment, I live for the future. I’m not getting ready to go up against my fellow draft prospects… I’m getting ready to go up against LeBron James and everyone else in the league. However, some of my goals for my rookie season would be to go in and win the rookie of the year award, take my team to the post-season if it’s a team that didn’t go there the previous year, and just simply play hard and contribute in any way that I can.” I don’t think you can personally ask for a better mentality from a player. Not only is he aware that being drafted is just a “title”, but he’s also aware that this is a journey, and the journey hasn’t even started yet. However, don’t get me wrong, he is MORE than ready to get the journey started!

A lot of people were stunned when they found out that Jordan Hamilton was not invited into the Green Room on draft day. I briefly asked Jordan what his thoughts were about that, he simply said “it just adds fuel to the fire.” And I agree… NBA players are NOT made on Draft night; they’re made on and off the court! Players get so caught up in the selection process, they tend to forget they still have unfinished business to take care of ON the court! Jordan said it best, “I want people to know that I’m more than just basketball… I’m about Christ and this is the perfect start to get out there and show people what type of person I really am.”

Fresh by Fortune

How often do you hear of 4 student-athletes/friends starting up their own clothing line? Right, my point exactly, not too often! I'm writing this article to introduce you all to something very creative, unique, and upcoming.
Fresh by Fortune is a clothing line that was started in July of 2010 by Calvin Taylor, 23 (President), Willie Dies, 23 (Vice President), Josh Dies, 23 (Logistics Manager), and Blaise Meeker, 23 (Treasurer). All current/former students of Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Calvin graduated from KSU in December 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and double minor in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Calvin also lettered 3 years in football for the golden flashes as a safety. Willie and Josh are both currently attending Kent State and are majoring in Business Management. Blaise graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management, and will be attending The University of Akron for Law School this upcoming Fall.

The basis of FBF (Fresh by Fortune) is 2 uniquely designed labels under the Fresh By Fortune Company name. The 2 lines are "Fresh Label" and "Fortune Label". Fresh Label consists of urban street wear such as T-shirts, Hats, Hoodies, and more. Fortune Label is the more upscale line which includes apparel such as polos, button ups, and sweaters; something that can be fashionable anywhere from a board meeting, to a night club.

Fresh by Fortune will be releasing their summer line on the first of next month (May 1, 2011) which can be seen on their official website (http://www.FreshbyFortuneClothing.com). This will consist of items for both Men and Women including shirts, hoodies, polos, hats, shoes, necklaces, braclets, and more.

To promote their summer line, they will be having a fashion show and Travis Porter concert in collaboration with Chuck Lew Ent. on April 22, 2011 at the Sky Lounge on Market St. in Akron, OH. The event will consist of a couple opening acts, the FBF fashion show, and then Travis Porter will come on stage and perform. Tickets for the event are $20 for general admission and $35 for VIP. On your sport…

How long have you played? What inspired you to start playing? I've played basketball for as long as I can remember. My father was a college basketball coach so I always wanted to follow him along and ended up staying in the gym playing basketball.

Where is your favorite place to play? When I lived in Cincinnati I had a half court in my back yard that I loved to play on. I was fortunate enough to have a Shoot-a-way and my father and I would stay up there all night shooting jump shots and talking hoops. Most of my knowledge about the game was learned on that court.

What is your favorite number? Why? I am a big Maravich fan (coach’s son, come on… he is the greatest of them all) so I was #44 in high school and wanted to wear it into college but it was reserved for William Bufford. I decided to wear #13 to honor a player my father coached at the University of Cincinnati, Lenny Stokes. He was like a big brother to me, took me to movies, gave me sneakers, shot around with me during the summer, etc. Every time I put that jersey on or signed my name it reminded me how he treated me and how I should continue to do the same.

Who is the best player you’ve played WITH and AGAINST? I was fortunate enough to play with LeBron in high school at a camp in Akron, so I would say he is the best player I have ever played with. But in terms of college and a team setting I would say that Evan Turner is the best player I have played with. He was the best player in college basketball his Junior year and was so versatile. Fortunately, I always played with really good players so I can not say that one particular player stands out in my mind as someone that was the best we played against. We always had just as good talent guarding him that gave them fits defensively.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it? None

What made you choose THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY? I never gave anything else a shot.

If you didn’t play basketball, what sport would you play? I don’t think I would, maybe baseball or golf.

What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it? Winning in the NIT, it was not the standard that we set with our team or program and it was an empty victory. Our guys were better than the NIT and we did not come together as a group to prove that to anyone.

Have you ever had an injury while playing? Yes, I have broken my nose several times.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment? The Final Four 2007

What is your most memorable moment? Why? Hugging my father after beating Memphis to go to the Final Four. Sharing that moment with him was something that I will always remember.

How has your sport helped you become who you are today? Athletics as taught me so many different things, it is difficult to name them all. I can say with every life circumstance I have had, I can easily relate it to basketball.

How has your family reacted to all of your sporting success? They love it and are huge supporters of my career. It is nice to have them involved and following the teams I am apart of regardless of where we are playing or where I am living.

What separates you from everyone else in life? I am not sure, I have never thought of that… I know that I am very fortunate and have been in the right place at the right time, which has led to a lot of my opportunities. I am very thankful for those opportunities and I try to do my best to make the most of them. I am sure anyone in that position would do the same.

Behind your sport…

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I do not have much spare time so when I do get some I like to remove my self from basketball and try to get away from it for a while.

What is the first thing you notice about people? Their sneakers.

Do you have a saying or motto that you live by? Favorite quote? “Try hard, have fun, and never quit” my father gave that to me and repeated it frequently when I was young.

Who is the most influential person you’ve met? Why? My father, he taught me everything I know about character and basketball.

What do you value the most? The small things, time spent with family and friends laughing or just relaxing. In this profession they are few and far between. Those moments mean so much when you are alone in a hotel or weeks apart from your family.

What is your major? Why did you choose it? My bachelors degree is in Special Education and my masters is in Education Psychology. Coaching is teaching, they go hand in hand.

Outside of basketball, what are your visions/goals in life? Have a great family and marriage like the one I saw my parents have and create for my brother and myself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I try to focus on the now and how I can be the very best at my job.

Present Day…

What are you up to nowadays? I am at the University of Arizona working with Sean Miller and the Men’s Basketball Program as a Graduate Assistant.

What made you want to start coaching? My father, he has been coaching for over 30 years and I love the relationships he has created.

How long have you been coaching? This is my first year on a staff but I have coached AAU for the last few years.

How did you end up coaching at Arizona? I have had a relationship with our assistant coach Archie Miller since he was an assistant coach at Ohio State. He contacted me as soon as he left Columbus for Tucson and told me to keep my options open in case there was an opening in the staff here in Tucson.

What’s your favorite part about coaching? Least favorite part? I love the relationships that are created because of basketball. Seeing each player develop as a person and player is so exciting. The most difficult thing may be seeing those players leave after all of the growth they have made in the short time in your program.

Final thoughts...

What are your thoughts about Mylan Murphy? I have only spoken with Mylan a few times but he seems like a very driven and well accomplished person for being so young in age.

What advice do you have to anyone reading your story? Keep working and always stay focused on the big picture. Like Cam’ron said, “this ain’t over night, its years in the process”… Nothing just happens, it takes a lot of work and patience to get there.

Name 5 things you would like to accomplish by the age of 30 – I do not think like that. I do not have career goals that have a time line but instead worry about doing the best job I can do right now to help Coach Miller and Arizona Basketball.

What will you continue to Strive4? I will continue to strive for our program to be the very best it can be. We have a lot of resources that provided us a clear advantage over other programs. It is important that we keep highlighting our advantages and moving forward as a program.

How long have you basketball? What inspired you to start playing?
I started playing when I was 4 yrs old; my older cousin played and I wanted to do everything he did so I started playing ball and haven’t stopped since.

Where is your favorite place to play?
At my school, we have some of the best pickup games in the nation.

What is your favorite number? Why?
My favorite number is 5. It’s my birthday, and when I was younger, I loved Magic Johnson and watched a lot of his old games. He was also my favorite player at the time but I wanted my own number so I added his “3+2” together and just stuck with 5.

Who is the best player you’ve played WITH and AGAINST?
The best player that I have played with would be Jrue Holiday (Philadelphia 76ers), there’s nothing he can’t do on the court. And I would say Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets) would be the best player I have played against.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?
I pray before every game.

What made you choose UCLA?
I always loved UCLA basketball growing up as a kid. I also wanted my family to be at all my games so that’s another reason why I chose to come here.

What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it?
The worst experience I have had was when I got into a huge fight with my mom and wanted to leave the house and all that and my relationship with her was essentially over for about a month. I learned that I need that woman more than anyone in the world and that family is the most important thing in life.

Have you ever had an injury while playing?
Yes I have pulled my groin a few times; it hurts.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment?
I would say getting a scholarship to play basketball and getting my education paid for so my parents wouldn’t have to.

What is your most memorable moment? Why?
My most memorable moment would be when I was in high school I had a game where I got 5 steals and 5 dunks in a row against our rival school. They were screaming overrated before the first steal and after the last dunk they were dead quiet.

How has basketball helped you become who you are today?
Without basketball, I really don’t know where I would be right now in my life. Through this sport I have done things that I would have never had the opportunity to do if I didn’t play. The adversity that happens in every game directly correlates to adversity in life and ball has taught me how to deal with that.

How has your family reacted to all of your sporting success?
My parents and family are the most proud people in the world of me. They have been there every step of the way and have worked hard for me to get where I am at so they are just as grateful as I am.

I know I am my own man and I have my own opinion, and because of my faith I know that no one can take that away from me.

As you know, the Florida State Men's Basketball team are making a lot of noise this season! Sitting with an overall record of 15-5, the FSU hoop team is now #1 in the ACC (5-1). Recently coming off the biggest upset of the year (Beating #1 Duke, 66-61), they are using that momentum and coming at teams full speed. Since then, Florida State has also beat NC State, Miami, and they just handled Boston College in a 67-51 victory as well. Trust me, this team's success isn't a "fluke". They are #9 in the country when it comes to team rebounding each game (40.8rpg).

What was it like beating previously #1 ranked Duke?
"It was a great feeling. I knew we could do it if we just believed and knew that we could as a team, and have confidence in ourselves."

How does it feel to be #1 in the ACC right now?

"I knew we could hold this spot, but we just had to believe in ourselves and buy into what the coaches have been telling us and be unified as a team."

As the leader of the Florida State team, what are your overall thoughts on the season so far?

"I feel we have underachieved, but we have turned things around and are headed in the right direction. We control our own destiny."

What are some of the goals that the FSU Men's Basketball team has for this season?
"We are hoping and striving to be the best team in the ACC. We are also trying to win a championship this season and push this program to the next level!"

I have been playing football since the age of 6... What inspired me was the competition and my family.

My favorite place to play is ROSS-ADE stadium (Purdue) because that atmosphere is crazy!!

My favorite number is 1 because I love single digit numbers. Just happens to be number 1.

Best player I have ever played with in high school is my childhood best friend an still my best friend till this day Lamar Harvey, in college I would say Keith Smith, and best player I have ever played against or seen would be LaGarette Blount from Oregon.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?

Yeah I always read the bible and/or least pray before every game, also just listen to music.

What made you choose Purdue University?

I felt I was getting the best of both worlds while getting to compete in the BigTen, I also was getting the chance to get a great degree.

If you didn’t play football, what sport would you play?

I would play Basketball.

What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it?

The worst experience was losing my last high school football game. I learned that you can’t win them all but as long as you come out of the game knowing you did all you could then you shouldn’t have any regrets.

Have you ever had an injury while performing your sport?

Yes. Sprained ankles plenty of times.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was getting to play Division 1 football.

What is your most memorable moment? Why?

Winning the state championship in basketball my senior year of high school. Why because it’s a once a lifetime thing an you only get one shot at it.

My Family has been very proud and blessed that I have the opportunity to play football and get a free education.

I've swam for 11 years. I saw my neighbors’ swimming sign, and just had to have one for myself, so my parents signed me up.

A chance to win four years in a row and to be coached by a living legend.

If you didn’t swim, what sport would you play?

Basketball for sure.

What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it?

I got really sick during my freshman year and lost 30 lbs and ended up not making our NCAA championships travel team. It taught me that being on top of the medicine your doctor gives you is no joke.

Have you ever had an injury while performing your sport?

Swimmers ear, I know that sounds like some sissy stuff, but a friend of mine was hospitalized from pneumonia for 2 months from inhaling water, true story.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment?

So far, placing 13th in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle events and summer nationals.

What is your most memorable moment? Why?

Not making the NCAA team my freshman year. It was painful to not be a part of something so great (winning a national championship), and having to watch them win from home. It was still tight to see us win and don't get me wrong I'm glad we won, but it's like not being in the game for the 4th quarter.

How has swimming helped you become who you are today?

Made me realize that if I'm ready and willing to sacrifice for something, I can do whatever I put my mind to.

How has your family reacted to all of your sporting success?

They're just really proud. They want me to meet people they work with lol, and everybody is cheesing all the time.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Chillin with my boys, meeting new people (especially the pretty UT girls), playing basketball and video games.

I would say everyone I've ever met. I try to learn from people and their successes and mistakes, and mold those observations into my own person.

When you hear “St. Vincent-St. Mary High School”, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is LeBron James; since that is the high school he attended. You might have also seen the movie “More Than A Game” which focuses on the lives of LeBron and the “Fab 5” from Akron, OH (LeBron James, Sian Cotton, Willie McGee, Dru Joyce III, and Romeo Travis) who all attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School together. Regardless, you get the point; there is nothing but HISTORY and TRADITION behind the name of this high school! I’m here to tell you about a young hooper that is currently at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School following the lead and tradition that his big homies established; Ricky Johnson Jr.

Just because Ricky is from Akron, OH and goes to the same high school that the Fab5 went to, please don’t get it twisted! Ricky has been on the map for years! He created a name for himself as one of the top point guards in the country a long time ago through the AAU circuit; his talent on the court definitely speaks for itself! First there was Jameer Nelson… Now there is Carl “Tay” Jones! Many of you are familiar with St. Joseph basketball from their incredible season in 2003-2004. Not only did that squad have a 27-0 regular season record, they also made a CRAZY tournament run all the way down to the Elite8 where they lost a close buzzer beater game to advance to the Final 4. The #1 ranked team in the nation at one point were led by Jameer Nelson (Now of the Orlando Magic) alongside, Delonte West (Boston Celtics). My point is, those two current NBA guards started somewhere, and it is the EXACT spot that Carl Jones is currently in!

Coming off of one of the best freshman seasons one could ask for, Tay isn’t even satisfied! Playing in ALL 31 games as a freshman, and even averaging 9.6 points a game, he knows there so much more to come. But when I tell you about Tay, I’m not just speaking for my own good, I’m telling you; he is the REAL DEAL!!! He hit double figures 13 times last season, including scoring 16 points with two assists and two steals against rival Villanova (The Holy War rivalry game) which is a basketball powerhouse and title contender every year. Remember, this is a freshman we are talking about! He was also named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for Nov. 22, for averaging 17 points and 3.5 rebounds in victories over Boston College and Holy Cross.

Now, going into his sophomore year, Tay has visions of nothing but success! He told me two goals that he has approaching this season; make it to the dance (NCAA tournament), and make 1^st team all conference (Atlantic10). For many, you might be saying those are high hopes for just a sophomore to have. But for Tay, it’s nothing major at all, just basic goals and personal expectations that he plans on reaching. He also prays during every national anthem, so that lets you know Tay values the fact of without the man above, nothing would be possible.Out of curiosity, I asked him where his favorite place to play was and he told me “Duke"; keep in mind, that’s arguably the HARDEST gym to play at in college basketball, EVER! So you see the competitive and fearless mentality that he has. Don’t get it twisted, Tay didn’t end up at St. Joes by chance… He was heavily recruited throughout the country coming out of high school, (Marquette, USC, Xavier, Penn St, etc) but in the end, he felt that St. Joes would be the best fit for him and his future. Tay is extremely happy with his decision and thankful for his current role on the team.

Tay has always been known as a quiet, laid back and kept to himself kind of person, but he has always let his actions speak louder than his words. If you ask Tay where he sees himself in 5 years, he will tell you, “In the league” (NBA). He is also majoring in business, which makes a good combination once you know what his favorite quote is; “Premature Millionaire”. So you get the point, he’s focused, on a mission, and definitely about getting money… TAY JONES HAS MONEY ON HIS MIND!!!

Should College Athletes Be Paid???

The life of a college student-athlete has NEVER been easy! With the title “Collegiate Student-Athlete”, there also comes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. I’m not too sure “society” as a whole is familiar with the hard work and dedication that is put worth by student-athletes. As a student-athlete, I can personally say that “it is your life”. Everything revolves around school, and the sport that you play for your school; there isn’t much time for anything else.

There has been a particular question/debate that has been brought to the attention of the NCAA for many years now, and now that I am in the category of being a college student-athlete, I understand the importance of this issue. Many people have various opinions regarding this topic, and that’s completely fine. However, I will tell you this; there is definitely a GREAT debate behind this question and it should be settled in some kind of way!

Should college athletes be paid to play??? Hmmm… That’s a great question… Many of you probably instantly said “no”, and others may have instantly said “yes”; some of you still might be thinking of an answer. In my opinion, I would answer this question by saying “YES, college athletes should receive some type of funding for performing their sport”. There are many variables that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to this question; including all the pros as well as cons depending on one’s outlook. Let me briefly outline a few things and tell you why I believe they should be paid…

If you really think about it, the NCAA will NEVER bring up the fact of how much money they make off of their student-athletes for their talents, events, games, etc, right? BUT, they will be the FIRST to take away rights/privileges from an athlete in result of the smallest situation that may have occurred. Not saying they don’t have the right to do this; of course they do! Depending on the level of play (Division 1, 2, or 3), the competition is greater which plays a different role for each institution. Then you have to factor in scholarships depending on the level of play as well. Granite, the “majority” of D1 and D2 athletes more than likely receive free, or close to free education and/or food and room & board, those amounts just don’t even come close to total up to the revenue generated by these colleges and institutions for their athletes and their sports teams. When it comes to an athlete over the period of a year, yes, we can be talking anywhere from $1-$60,000 depending on the school and the amount that is granted to the athlete, but does that compare to millions of dollars that are being made off of games, events, sales, etc????? I don’t think so folks! So my point with that is, these schools are making waaaaay more money off of the athlete’s than their education costs. In the end, if you ask me, thousands just don’t compare to millions.

However, one of the most important factors is the life of the student-athlete. Life revolves around academics, and then the sport which entails various forms of training, games, events, and traveling which is usually year round. The average student-athlete doesn’t have any spare time to work a job to support their selves. So I think if athletes were paid for playing in some sort of way, it would compensate for their inability to work a job. Many people think that Student-Athletes have it “sooo easy” when really it is the other way around. Student-Athletes have it the worst! Our schedules are extremely strict and demanding. Now as far as an actual figure (amount of money) that athletes should be paid would be the major thing for debate. I personally think possibly a minimum wage rate or a set amount for the hours put forth each month that they are in season. Not a lot, just enough to be able to satisfy their needs: food, toiletries, etc. Like I stated above, I realize how much money the NCAA and these institutions make off of the athletes, I just feel it would only be right to at least spread the wealth throughout the whole field. Some people may argue the fact of these athletes only being amateurs and not being “professionals”, I agree, however, this level of athletics is the transitioning point to becoming professionals, so why not create some type of contract maybe stating that the athlete must consent to staying all four years and obtaining their bachelors degree in order to receive the funding up throughout their term in college…? Or possibly make them sustain a certain G.P.A. in order to keep their funding, that way we are producing more intelligent and productive student-athletes as well…?

I’m not saying that I’m right about this issue; However, I am just trying to bring awareness to the need of most student-athletes around the country. Maybe this will open people’s eyes and raise possible options and alternatives of thinking for people. Most people bring up this question without the opinion of an actual student-athlete, so here I am; a current collegiate student-athlete giving my thought on the issue… It’s definitely something to think about! I have played since I was 4. My three older brothers all played so I followed their lead.

My favorite place to compete would be against any Big10 school.

7 (because I’m Irish and its lucky!) or 4 because that was my number since 7th grade.

Who is the best player you’ve played WITH and AGAINST?

With- Liz Secue (High School teammate-Currently plays for Purdue University W. Soccer)

Against- Once you get to a higher level, you play against the top players in the nation all the time.. I couldn’t just name “one” player, there has been so many.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?

If you didn’t play soccer, what sport would you play?

Basketball! I was a point guard and loved it! Could never remember all the plays though.

What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it?

Probably a bad foot injury. I just had surgery on it not long ago, finally, but when it wasn’t fixed yet it would hurt all the time and I learned to play through the pain and not complain. I also realized there are bigger things than a foot injury.

Have you ever had an injury while performing your sport?

Yes, my foot injury. I had an extra bone removed and a screw put in to reconnect a tendon.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment?

Playing a Big10 sport is a huge accomplishment. It is a ton of work.

What is your most memorable moment? Why?

Winning State senior year and being voted #1 team in the nation with my team, Walsh Jesuit. Also – making it to the Sweet 16 last year with Wisconsin.

How has your sport helped you become who you are today?

Made the best friends ever, learned how to have time management, and become coachable and also a good teammate.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

When it comes to women’s soccer, the #20 ranked Wisconsin Badgers are nothing to play with! Senior, Darcy Riley and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers women’s soccer team are currently in season and are trying to build off of the spectacular season that they had last year. The women’s badgers made it to the Sweet16 last season which is great, but they have even higher expectations for this season!

Let me run you through the past couple years of Darcy’s life in the soccer world:

Prep: Led Walsh Jesuit High School to an undefeated season (23-0). Darcy’s high school team also won the Ohio High School State Championship, and also received the title of the #1 ranked team in the nation that season as well! Not even mentioning all of the individual awards and player of the year awards that Darcy received as well.
Freshmen Year: Darcy recorded her first collegiate career goal.

Sophomore Year: Ended the season with 5 points, including 1 goal and 3 assists.

Junior Year: Had the assist to the Badgers first goal of the 2009 season. In the latter part of the season, Darcy had surgery on her foot which kept her out of soccer for many months.

Senior Year: Just came off of a tough loss (1-0) to the #3 ranked team in the country (UCLA). Next game is against Portland (Friday, September 3, 2010).

You get the point… Soccer has been a HUGE part of Darcy’s life thus far, and she plans on it staying that way! Darcy is majoring in Education; she loves kids and loves teaching. With that major, she plans on graduating and then starting her career in coaching. But this isn’t just a profession that she “wants to pursue”; she is literally made for this! Darcy now has a reward that is named after her (The Darcy Riley Award) which is given to student-athletes who excel in sports as well as the representation of her high school’s motto “men and women for others”.

With all the things that Darcy has gone through, one thing that I can say is she has maintained her composure and has been able to prevail through any obstacle thrown at her! Someone like this is truly one to look up to and admire… I asked her if she had any advice to give to anyone that is reading her story, and she said, “Just stay confident! Don’t get down if one person says no because there will be someone else that will want you! Always give it your ALL! If you don’t, you’ll regret it!”

3 years of college have completely flown by for 6’10 Pitt Center Gary McGhee… Entering into his senior season, he couldn’t be more ready to lead his team to another successful year! Gary, being 1 out of 3 captains on the team this year for the Panthers is excited to let all his leadership skills and hard work pay off on the court! With having an extremely busy summer due to traveling for basketball, Gary is finally back at the University of Pittsburg and ready to do his thing. Earlier in the summer, Gary attended the Amare Stoudamire Camp which was held in Chicago, IL at Attack Athletics, which is owned by the famous Tim Grover; Michael Jordan’s former trainer and many current NBA players as well. Gary also attended the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, OH as well earlier in the summer. However, the whole University of Pitt Men’s Basketball team did something very impressive this summer. They traveled to Ireland in which they stayed for 12 total days. Not only was it an opportunity of a lifetime for them that many other teams around the country didn’t get to do, but the Pitt hoop squad also played while they were over there and went 6-0; didn’t lose a game! That’s a PERFECT way to build team chemistry in the off-season. Now all they have to do is carry their success over to this upcoming season; which they are confident that they will!

I was asking Gary how basketball has been good to him in life and what has it allowed him to learn and he told me “He has learned how to face adversity and how to react to it when it arises. It also has helped him make a lot of friends that he wouldn’t have normally been able to meet and also has allowed him to travel many different places”; like Ireland.

I could talk about basketball all day long, however, the point that I want to stress to you is how great of an individual Gary truly is… Outside of basketball… He is definitely a man of great character. He values God and Family first before anything else and realizes without them, nothing would be possible. His favorite quote is “Adversity breaks some people, for others it helps them break records.” That completely fits Gary’s life with the ups and downs that he has gone through. However, the ending fits because he has and will continue to overcome any obstacle that arises in his life! If you want to look into the future, I can tell you this: You will either see Gary playing professional basketball in the NBA, overseas, or even being a sports broadcaster. He will soon have the communications major, and that is a dream job he would like to pursue after basketball. Regardless, I’d say here in a few years, GARY MCGHEE will be on a television near you!

I have been playing since I was 7years old. My Dad inspired me to play the game, he put the ball in my hands and I have held on to it since.

The best player I played with was Dejuan Blair, my college teammate (Current San Antonio Spurs forward), and the best player I played against is Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves forward).

Yes, I come to the gym an hour early and get some shots up.

If I didn’t play basketball, I would play football I loved playing defensive tackle.

I caught an elbow to the mouth my sophomore year and had to get 4 stitches in my lip.

Who knows a lot about soccer?? Yea, me either… One thing that most of you may know about soccer is that it is the world’s most loved sport! It’s extremely popular and common all throughout our world and is highly respected. I’m going to give you a little quiz… Tell me how many of the terms listed below you recognize:

Coming off of a outstanding season last year, Victoria beat the school’s shut-out record; which she calls one of her most memorable moments… “Shutting UNC (University of North Carolina) out 1-0 last year was my most memorable moment because UNC is a team that everyone is out to beat and it doesn’t happen easy. They have won the majority of the NCAA titles since soccer started so beating them is definitely a dream come true; not many teams can say they have beaten the national champs!” Victoria has been playing soccer since she was 5 years old, so she has definitely seen a lot of ups, as well as a lot of downs (including tearing both ACL’s in both knees). However, she has been able to maintain a particular mindset that has allowed her to set herself apart from everyone else; her heart and drive and love for the game of soccer!

As you can see, Victoria Alonzo is on her grind when it comes to the soccer field! She’s definitely one of the top, up and coming goalies in women’s collegiate soccer so I suggest you be on the lookout for her! Enough with soccer… I asked the Dallas, TX native why she picked The U out of all the other schools in the country; she said “The weather and family environment” which is extremely important to her due to her being clearly across the country from home sweet home. Vikki also stated that she values the time she spends with her family and friends the most out of anything because she is so far away from home and rarely gets to go back to see them. But no worries, Vikki has truly found a home away from home, even saying that her favorite part about college is “making new memories with her teammates”, so I’m sure, despite her being homesick, she is having the time of her life in Miami!

"An Ivy League Inspiration"

If you were given a chance to attend an Ivy League School, how would you feel? Do you think you could handle it? Would you even consider it? As we all know, when it comes to academics; attending an Ivy League School is as big as it gets!!! Everything about attending an Ivy League School is extremely rare and difficult. Let alone, the simple fact of being able to apply and be considered for acceptance into whichever school it is.
Well, out in New Haven, Connecticut at Yale University, there is a young, black, football player by the name of Mordecai Cargill who is basically proving every person that said he couldn’t succeed wrong. Just the simple fact of saying he is an Ivy league student is enough satisfaction for one to have, but Mordecai hasn’t even let that get to him one bit. He has remained humble and focused with his mind on one thing in life; HAPPINESS!

Although Mordecai is a Division I athlete, there is 1 major thing that separates him from all other D1 athletes… Being at an Ivy League school, they are unable to receive athletic scholarships! Meaning, Mordecai isn’t on a full ride as most of the Division I players across the country may be. This isn't a bad thing by any means! This truly shows the love and passion of Football that Mordecai has within himself. To turn down full ride scholarships from other universities because he truly cares about his academics that much; really brings out Mordecai’s inner being! With these 3 major goals on his mind for this upcoming season/school year, you’ll understand what I’m talking about:

1.   Follow through and stay committed to all the things that I start.
2.   Have more discipline in practice, weight room, class, and my studying.
3.   Be more spiritually grounded… Pray, meditate, and chill.

However, don’t think this is “all” about academics, because it’s not! Mordecai Cargill is the starting running back for Yale and is on his grind on the football field! He told me that he sees himself playing in the NFL in 5 years, and he’s planning on doing whatever it takes to get there! So you can take my word, BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR HIM!!!

The Ivy League consists of these 8 institutions: Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. The Job Search and the Young Professional

With graduation around the around the corner for many future young professionals, companies throughout the nation are gearing up for a hiring frenzy. The period between May and August is huge for new hiring. Use the following tips to end up with the position you want.

1. DO research the position you are interested in. Figure out what it is that you want to do, and how to go about doing it. While this sounds like basic information, it is often the reason why people end up in positions that they do not enjoy. Research the market for that position, the salary, where the jobs are, and the major employers in the industry.

2.    DO find out salary information for the position. Many times, people ended up not getting what they deserve because they simply do not know what they deserve. Many first time job seekers forget things such as cost of living and inflation when figuring out how much they should accept. Resources like the department of labor, and salary.com are excellent ways to find out what you are worth. Remember, there is a HUGE difference between $36,500 in North Dakota, and $35,000 in Washington D.C.

3.    DO have your Résumé and cover letters proofread. Many times we as Young Professionals feel as if we know all there is to know. I am guilty of this myself. We think that because we have our degree, we KNOW how to write a Résumé and cover letter. Just because you can write does not mean you will not make mistakes. Have a professor, friend, or parent proofread your résumé and cover letter to make sure what’s written is actually what you are trying to convey.

4.    DO have a personal “Board of Directors” to help you along your job search and your career. Many times young professionals make the mistake of going into the job search blind. We all know that who you know is more important than WHAT you know. Applying to jobs blindly will limit your chance of getting a job you want. Create a personal board of directors who will act as a base network for you. These should be people that you trust, and that are established professionals in the field you are interested in.

5.    Do give copies of your Résumé to your references. This is one of the most important things that you can do on your job search. How can your references speak highly of your work, when they do not know what work you have done? Supervisors are not your personal assistants, and they have a lot to remember themselves, simply giving them your résumé can do wonders when your interviewer calls your reference and asks about a specific project you've worked on.

If you haven't caught on to the message that I am trying to get across, please let me explain. The title says, THINK. BELIEVE. RECEIVE. Some of you might be in a bad situation, some of you may be having a horrible week. Let me be the first to say, not matter how bad a situation is, you can change it! With those three simple tasks (THINK. BELIEVE. RECEIVE.) you can conquer any goal and any situation. Everything that happens in your life, you create. I know that seems hard to believe, but its true. To start, think of something negative that repeatedly happens to you. Now, try to remember if you were thinking of how you DIDN'T want that same thing to happen. Okay. Now, think of something good that repeatedly has happened to you. Try to remember if you were thinking you WANTED that thing to happen. I bet your answer was yes to both questions. To start building that better reality that you want, only focus on the things you WANT to happen. All of the negative things in your life will fade away, trust me. Though, remember that the 'Believing' part is key. If you don't believe it in your heart, it will not become your reality. You have the power to turn that rainy day into a sunny day within seconds. You just have to THINK. BELIEVE. and you will RECEIVE!

My name is Ean Johnson. I am a 25 year old young professional currently living in Chicago. I work for the United States Department of Commerce as an Economic Developer. In my job, I help communities receive grant funds to create jobs. I am a 2007 Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University graduate with a degree in Economics. I am a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. I am originally from Akron, OH and I have lived in Virginia, Dayton, and New York. To Infinity and BEYOND...!!!

Do you remember that song "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambataa & The Soul Sonic Force? How that song sounded so space age and before its time? That fashion is coming in fast on a rock straight from planet rock. Who would've known? Will this be a short stint or make an impact?

With a tiny help from Lady Gaga this is not normal, alien exist trend is making a little buzz right now. In mostly every music video, there is some dab of space in it. Mr. American Idol Adam Lambert has a video where he is wearing space gear and having a party in the woods, weird?? Black Eye Peas and the non stop intergalactic videos and concerts. Even the voice of our "generation" Kanye West has stolen little knick knacks from it and used it in album sales and makes trends, like the window curtain glasses. Just seeing all this i want to be part of the trend also. I would so rock the moon shoes and light pastel colors lol (Already did, currently wearing)!

So if you want to be a part of this, here are some tips for the attire. Wearing pastel colored shirts; doesn't matter what colors they are! Wear glasses that look like window blines. Michael Jackson with all the zippers if possible, if not any kind of white leather jacket, or jacket with bright colors. Fitting jeans, NO SKINNY JEANS, WE ALREADY DISCUSSED THAT ISSUE!!! Don't make me come after you!? Just kidding! Hi top Nike dunks or Kanye West shoe "Air Yeezy". Thats the attire to fit in.

How do you feel about this trend? Yay or Nay? I approve this fashion stint. Just because there will be a whole ensemble that will shock you. Even some things that you might not ever see again!! So I'm hoping all fashion designers and celebrities please keep this going for another couple months or longer. I want to see all the wacky things and designs that might make it on MTV videos. So with that being said thank you, be on the look out! You might see a person wearing a Darth Vader outfit. Don't judge because he just trying to fit in and he comes in peace (See where I went with that) lol. Thank You

Going into this upcoming season, Chris Singleton is the reigning 2010 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and one of the nation’s top college basketball players and is more prepared than ever! This summer in particular has been an opportunity of a lifetime for the Florida State University Standout! He has attended every possible “big name” camp that you could imagine for a college basketball player…

-Kevin Durant Skills Academy (Chicago, IL) where he also served as a camp counselor.

-LeBron James Skills Academy (Akron, OH) where he also served as a camp counselor.
-USA Select Team to train against the USA Olympic Team in Las Vegas, NV
-Adidas Nations in this upcoming month of August which will be in Chicago, IL

Chris mentioned to me that one thing he enjoys doing in his spare time is traveling… But if you knew his story, you would find out he hardly ever has “spare time”, but when he does, it usually traveling... For basketball… Chris has been all over the country this summer; but as you can imagine, it’s nothing new to him. This has been his life since he can remember; traveling for aau tournaments, games, and camps. I asked Chris what his favorite part about college was, and he told me “meeting different people”, and basketball sure has opened multiple doors for Chris to do both; Travel and meet different people!

Not only has Chris been exposed to the traveling, networking, and opportunity to play in front of many well-connected people, but most importantly, Chris began to tell me how basketball has helped him become the person who he is now, by saying, “It has helped me grow up and mature… It has also taught me how to become a business man. It really creates a lot of opportunity by the number of people you are able to run across and meet”. Chris’ mindset is truly something that is hard to find within a student-athlete. As I sat in the hotel room with Chris during the LeBron Skills Academy, he was there working on homework for his online class; despite the fact of being away from school and traveling for basketball. Someone of his stature could easily just be focused on going to the NBA, and call it quits… But Chris continues to work hard in the classroom as well; majoring in Hospitality and minoring in business. I asked him where he saw himself in 5 years, and he answered “Owning a business somewhere, and in the NBA grinding”!

To sum it all up, Chris Singleton is someone you will see all over the place within a few years; basketball and business wise. I asked him what were some of his goals or visions outside of basketball, and he told me “I want to be a successful business man and be able to influence all types of people, from the rich all the way to the poor”. Last but not least, I wanted to share one of Chris’ favorite quotes with you all…. “You are who set your mind to be” and that is exactly what Chris Singleton is doing!

Being in LOVE with technology and music, what is better way to start off my first blog?!?! Giving you the latest way to listen to your music, whether it's blasting off your iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Android or other device, the way all the athletes and celebrities are listening to their music is the Dr. Dre way...

The way is the Dr. Dre Beat headphones by Monster. All around the campus of Indiana, I see people here and there with these Dr. Dre headphones jamming out and looking stylish. I must admit that I do have my own pair of Beats...

I definitely did not cop a pair of the headphones just for the fun of it. These headphones run about $299. But they are well worth the money.

The headphones include : The Studio headphones (of course), 2 cables: RED cable being the standard cable to plug into your headphones and device, the BLACK cable is the Monster iSonitalk cable which allows you to hook it up to your iPhone and/or Blackberry, so you can listen to music on your phone and when you receive a call you don't have to take your headphones off to answer the call.

I love this feature about the Beats because it is a hassle listening to music and having your phone ring so you have to take the headphones off in order to talk! There is also a carrying case so your EVER SO PRICEY headphones won't break or get damaged; a cleaning cloth; 2 AAA batteries (YES, these headphones require batteries) and of course a 1-year warranty.
From a personal standpoint, I love these headphones. They are comfortable on the ear and they adjust quite easily. There is a mute button on the side which allows you to mute the song that is currently playing and listening to other things around you. The Beats also fold up quite nicely and fit into the carrying case. The sound that comes out of these headphones are simply AMAZING!!! It truly feels that I'm in my own world when I am listening to ~~Justin Bieber~~... I mean Rick Ross's Aston Martin Music. Well regardless of what you are listening to they still sound great! The bass can't not even be compared to anything that I have heard come from a headphone before. When the perfect song comes on that already has some bass to it, the headphones just take it to an completely different level!!! The batteries are definitely the down side to the headphones because you can never be too sure of when your batteries might die on you. So if you by these headphones make sure you carry a spare pair of batteries because you won't want to miss a beat without your Beats by Dr. Dre.

Can't Rock Skinny Jeans Cuz My Knots Won't Fit!!

Is the baggy clothes era dead, or is extremely tight clothes in? I don't know but I'm getting to the bottom of it. Like a wise man said "Can't rock skinny jeans cuz my knots won't fit"! That's how I feel at times. Maybe some people can pull off this look, but as a person that has tried this trend, I'm not a fan!

From friends that wear this trend they say it doesn't bother them and they don't feel trapped with the tightness. Even saying that its more comfortable than fitting jeans in general!! What ever the case maybe its making a statement in the fashion world. I feel that when I wear them I look like an elephant. Lol.. It seems the taller you are the better you look in them.

If you wear this current trend don't look like a fool wearing them. Example, Lil Wayne. the way he wears his skinny jeans is complete childish. The man has them down to his knees basically. If your going to do a trend do it correctly, and don't disgrace it. The New Boyz are like in the front end of this trend with their tight jeans and long shirts make it look like a reasonable fashion statement. I kind understand weary comfy but fitting clothes, but to wear jeans that cut off your blood circulation is a bit overboard. Celebs are wearing this with a smile. Pete Wentz, Beyonce, Kristen Stewart, just to name a few. Most likely women can pull this off more than guys. On the other hand Jay-Z is a main non-supporter of the no circulation jeans, so much that he even dissed the trend in one of his songs.

So I give this trend a decline! I jus feel that I can't see myself wearing this one day if that anyday. I'm not doing this blog to disrespect anyone, its just how I feel. ANYTHING CAN BE ART

Different forms of art fit different forms of people. I think the art of being an athlete is a good way to prove that anything can be an art. I want to show people how the different aspects of playing a sport are considered art. Usually we view sports as the complete opposite of artistic. A classic controversy is the band geek versus the jock. Though what people don’t realize is that they are both artists with different creations. They aren’t so different when it comes to their core purpose. I am going to shred those stereotypes into pieces, right now.

First of all, I am talking about serious, dedicated athletes that are in it to win it. Serious athletes have to sacrifice their body and mind, food, and their time. Physical fitness is a must for athletes.They have to have stamina, power, muscle, endurance. All of which do not come easy! Spending time in the weight room is a given, no exceptions. Combining the fitness regimen with the actual skill building of the sport, is mind blowing. One thing you won’t ever hear of is an athlete who is on an all Snickers diet. All the training and skill building means nothing without nutrition. Bottom line, athletes don’t eat junk.

A balanced meal plan is a discipline that non-athletes sometimes don’t understand. In no way am I saying that it isn’t necessary for non-athletes to eat properly. Just that it usually won’t jeopardize their career if they choose not to. We all have the tendency to crave unhealthy foods. Athletes have to learn to resist the temptation, and focus on their goal! Not only do athletes have to be physically tough, but also mentally tough. Your mind has to say yes when your body is screaming NO! Dealing with the stress of a close game, overtime, or even a one on one situation will take a toll on the mind. Knowing that nothing can stop you, and that you are the best, is key. Projecting positive thoughts will only end in positive results. That athlete or team will pull ahead in the close game, will win in overtime, and defeat the one on one situation. Mental toughness plays a huge role.

Time is always a factor in getting better at anything. How much time is put in, will determine how well skill building pays off. If two hours are put in for one whole week, that will not pay off as well as two hours every day for a whole week. When it comes to game time, two hours for one whole week will yield to two hours every day for a whole week.As you can see, playing a sport is a very demanding art. Not everyone is cut out for the life of an athlete. Not everyone will like the life of an athlete. But like I said, different forms of art fit different forms of people. You just have to find yours, and go for it!

I consider an artist a person who gives a piece of themselves in what they do. That can be anything from poetry to calculus to soccer. That is why an athlete is an artist. They give everything they have to play a sport, and they love it. They love it enough to sacrifice their mind and body. That is why they are an artist. If enough passion is involved in anything, that anything can be an art. Plain and simple.

So who is Brandon Huntley? Well hopefully after following me you will understand that I am visionary, a dreamer, and a confident young man striving to reach his goals. I Wanna Rock Right Now

So as I watch music shows (MTV, FuseTV, etc...), I realized that the late 80's fashion of hi top Nike's, bright neon suits, gold chains, gumby haircuts with the lines on the side is making its way back into modern day. I mean the late 80's was a very fashionable era. I mean this could be the come back of Kid-N-Play movies?! Ok, maybe not so much, but this is great. I mean the classic 3 feet tall hi top fade created by Christopher "Kid" Reid will make a daily appearance. Sad enough some people might not enjoy this, but, I would appreciate this resurrection of ADIDAS tracksuits and thick glasses look. The only people in my generation I see still representing this era is "The Cool Kids"!! I'm tired of seeing thick, gold chains only rocked on Halloween.

I can think back to LL Cool J and his multiple colored Kangol hats, Run DMC wearing ADIDAS without the laces, Rappers wearing thick gold chains, rings, watches and neon suits. MC Hammer and the now famous parachute pants. The list just goes on. Slick Rick wearing at least 48 gold chains, which were most of the time fake. Now i think about it half the jewelry worn by them were fake. Not only was the fashion era a classic nut the music matched its status. Biz Markie "Just A friend" was every man anthem when they were cheated on. MC Hammer's list on dance pop songs that made you want to slap your mama so hard along with the slick, suave dance moves?? Oooooooooh Man!! Salt-N-Pepa's bass thumping song with dirty messages of "Push It".

So as of Now I APPROVE this fashion statement, and i wish it will return quickly! Not only did it have a good fashion taste and music but it had a meaning like the generation before it. That message was PEACE. During that era the main concern at that time was having a good time and making a trend. I feel that impact has died do to the current trend of degrading women, drugs, money status, and being in a gang to prove your a tough guy. So please, please, please come back giant clocks, red jackets with zippers, high socks with low cut sneakers because I miss you. Thank You! -Teron Taylor

20 Questions: Washington Capitals Prospect Brendan Woods

August is the month in which many high school kids begin to prepare themselves for College. Others, like University of Wisconsin’s newest forward, Brendan Woods, are getting ready to take things to a whole new level!

Wood’s committed to the University of Wisconsin back in March to play in the Fall of 2011 and a lot is expected of the 6’2 – 180 pounder.

Chances are that Brendan will be taking off for the Muskegeon Lumberjacks of the USHL in the coming weeks..

We got a chance to sit down with University of Wisconsin’s newest shining Freshmen Forward this past week to discuss what is on the horizon for this young gun.

This will be one of many “Rapid Fire- 20 Question” segments you can come to expect here on Dorm Rumor and with my new blog “District Minors DC”.

One thing is for certain, this kid has the goods!

1) What is your earliest memory of playing the game?

- “My earliest memory of hockey was scoring the game winner in overtime in some tournament in Toronto.”

2) How did you become affiliated with the Washington Capitals organization?

- “I guess you could say i got affiliated through the capitals through my dad.”

3) We know your father Bob Woods has been with the Hershey Bears and now the Washington Capitals for quite some time. Has that influenced you to work harder so you both could play together professionally someday?

- “It does make me work harder but not to play for him. I'd rather play against him.”

4) What goals do you have for the upcoming season?

- “My goal this season is to win the Clark cup, play every situation,and score 30 +”.

5) We know you suffered a leg-to-leg collision at the beginning of last September, which resulted in a broken left femur! How does your leg feel now? What have you done to recover from this?

- “The legs getting there just needs to get stronger.”

6) Take us through a typical day at development camp this past week..

- “I'd wake up around 7ish get breakfast head to the rink, warm up, practice or play a game, stretch, get a cold tub bath, shower, eat lunch, do a team activity, dinner and then sleep”

7) Being the YOUNGEST player at the Capitals Development Camp, did you endure any hazing from any of the other players or coaches?

- “Not at all, the older guys actually made things easy for me, but some of the coaches since they knew me at a personal level would chirp me sometimes in a joking way.”

8) Who has been one of the best players you have gotten a chance to play with in your young career and why?

- “Just from this past week I'd have to say kuznetsov. He's extremely talented and can make a play happen in any situation.”

9) Any preference on sticks? Curves, superstitions, etc?

- “Right now i'm using an easton but I usually use ccms and I like a Sakic or Lecavalier.”

10) What kind of influence has your dad had on your career.

- “He's been a big part of my success everything I have I owe to him. I'd probably be nowhere without him and my family. They've always been there to push me.”

11) Being you have lived in central PA. Most of your life because of his career, do you think you would have gotten more opportunity to flourish elsewhere with your career growing up?

- “I don’t think so the hockey there was fine, I’m happy with the path I’ve chosen.”

12) What kind of mindset do you have before, during, and after a game?

- “Before the game I like to have my alone time to go through in my head what I will do in certain situations. During my mind is set to a high intense speed, and after hopefully it’s a good positive feeling of a job well done.”

13) What is the biggest game you have gotten to play in so far?

- “I'd have to say our last game in GB when they had over 8,000 people there and i had a goal and an assist.”

14) Most memorable goal?

- “Probably the goal against GB in front of 8,000 people.”

15) What is your view on analysts this past year who think that fighting should be banned from hockey?

- “I disagree I think fighting’s a big part of the game it can change the momentum for the other team to get them going.”

16) How do feel the game has advanced over the past 5-7 years? On any level..

- “I feel that more have come to respect the game a lot more, I think the changing of the rules has made it easier for the more talented to show their skills, but it’s also become more physical.”

17) With Wisconsin coming up in the 2011-12 season, do you see yourself committing all four years to playing in school and getting an education?

- “That all depends on how much I develop as a player those upcoming years.”

18) Favorite Number and why?

- “I'd have to say 17, 9, or 8. I like 17 because Chris Bourque wore it and i like the way he plays. I like 9 because it’s what I wore for the USA select camp which brought me good luck to make the USA team to go overseas, and 8 because it's the number my dad wore during his career.”

19) What kind of player would you consider yourself to be best described as? Some say 'Play Maker' others say 'Grinder'.. Humor us here.

- “I'd consider myself as a power forward. I see the ice well so I could also be a play maker. All the coaches though this camp have gotten on to me about not shooting enough, so maybe if I’d shoot more I’d also be known as a scorer as well.”

20) Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

- “Hopefully in the NHL with a few Stanley Cups under my belt.”

Needless to say, Woods seems up and ready for any challenge ON or OFF the ice this year as he prepares for college and his path to success in professional hockey.

Redbox to compete with Netflix

Word on the street is; Redbox is currently exploring the possibility of expanding its movie renal service beyond portable kiosks and onto the Internet. According to Redbox President Mitch Lowe, the company has considered a web service in order to expand the availability of its 100,000 strong movie catalog, making it easier for its customers to access its service. Details are still sketchy, but it’s not expected to be unveiled until October. With most companies trying their best to get their business on the Internet, it shouldn't be too surprising to see that Redbox is considering such a big move!

From Brooklyn, New York to St. Petersburg, Florida to Indiana University, Sasha Chaplin has been all throughout the East Coast. Sasha is now experiencing for the first time of her life the absence of her Mother’s presence on a daily basis due to her being far away from home, however, one thing I can say, despite all of the relocating, it has definitely paid off for the 6’4 Hoosiers Forward. Indiana is a HUGE basketball state with a lot of tradition. I had no choice but to ask Sasha how she ended up choosing Indiana versus all of the other schools that were recruiting her. She told me the reason why she chose Indiana University was because of the beautiful atmosphere, the school’s academics, her teammates and coaches. I automatically knew that Sasha was a very diverse and well rounded lady.

Rarely do you hear someone say that their personality is what separates them from everyone else. Sasha told me “I hold myself to high standards, and I don’t stop until I reach them, no matter how hard they may be”. That mindset describes not only her personality, but also her work ethic and drive to accomplish things in life! Normally, one might say their talents or a specific ability, but in Sasha’s case, there’s a lot more to it than just basketball!

Sasha is majoring in Informatics, which is a major dealing with computers. She chose that specific major because of her love for computers and technology, and her interest in how it applies to our daily lives. From music to cell phones to gadgets, Sasha is always up-to-date when it comes to the latest technology! That is how she has always been and is something she sees herself doing in the future as well.

But don’t get it twisted; Back to basketball!! I asked Sasha where she saw herself in 5 years, and she told me “Playing basketball professionally”. She shared a brief story with me saying she remembers when she was in 6th grade, she was being interview by a local newspaper and was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she said be in the WNBA. So this life that she has planned isn’t something that just came along the way, her goal ever since she was a little girl has always been to make it to the WNBA and she’s going right down that path!

The most impressive part about Sasha is what she’s gone through thus far, and the attitude she’s been able to maintain through it all. She stated “I’ve been injured a couple of times, but staying positive and focusing on my goals is what I’m trying to do. And also get through the hard times while keeping my goal in mind and continue pushing through and eventually I’ll reach it. Even though it may be hard, I have to do it at some point!”

I usually never say anything is “perfect”, but I can say, with that mentality, you can’t get any better; it is definitely as good as it gets! Sasha’s favorite quote is “Live everyday to fullest because tomorrow is never promised”, and I think that truly states exactly what she is doing on a daily basis! Sasha Chaplin is truly a female that the world needs to be aware of! I asked her if she had any advice to give all of the readers and she said “Dreams can come true. Keep working hard and never give up. No matter how hard the obstacles might be that you are facing make you stronger!”

Sharp working on own version of the "iPad"

Looks like Sharp wants in on the tablet game too! The company has revealed that it's planning to launch two new tablet devices that will eventually make their debut. These two devices will offer 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch displays, and they will sport LCD touchscreens that are capable of playing audio/video content and accessing the Internet.

When they're launched in the US, Sharp will be teaming up with Verizon, and will most likely offer built-in 3G for these devices. Considering the rumors that have been going around that Verizon would be offering a 10-inch tablet in the fall, things are looking good for tablet devices on Verizon. With AT&T offering Apple's popular iPad, let's see if Verizon will be able to find a device that will help it dethrone the iPad.

**First of all, I’d like to introduce myself to the DormRumor family, whether your a reader or a writer. My name is Marena. I have been blogging for a little over a year now, and I have two websites that I am working on right now. I am the Founder/Editor-in-chief of an online magazine called, 0riginally0riginal. I will be focusing on the topic, Art/Photography. For me, Art is more than just a picture, song, photo, poem etc. Art is the reflection of the artist that took the picture, wrote/sang the song, or wrote the poem. The artist is giving a little piece of themselves every time they sing, write, take a picture etc. I don’t know about you, but I believe that is very difficult. Your always going to have someone that will just shred your art into pieces with a bad review, or a blog post, or a hate video. That’s how an artist is tested. Will they crash under the pressure? Will they try to please the hater? Or will they rise above it all, stay true to who they are, and accomplish every goal they set?

If they are a true artist, question number three will be answered with a yes. For example, it takes more than just a great song for a musician to get signed. I don’t know how many times I have been on YouTube or Myspace, and I ask myself, “Why isn’t this person signed?” or “This song is great! Why does it only have 50 plays?” They aren’t popular because they didn’t overcome the bad review, nasty comment, or the pressure of the negative attention.They didn’t believe. I believe anyone can be anything, do anything, and have anything. If this artist with only 50 plays on his or her song would just stay focused, and BELIEVE that they could have a million plays on that very same song, then they would. With my online magazine I like to focus on the individuals that have that “Impossible is nothing” attitude. People like me, 0riginally0riginal people.

To sum it up, Art/Photography is a perfect fit for me. I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts and opinions with the DormRumor family, and help it grow. David Arnold Jr.

As you know, football season is right around the corner! Each year, everyone has their favorite college team/player that they follow. For me; my eyes are on the Northwestern University football team. There is a specific individual on a mission and is ready to have a break out year! Junior Safety, David Arnold is ready to let his hard work and dedication show on the field this year! So be on the lookout for Northwestern’s #32 when it comes to Big Ten Football.

David Arnold isn’t just the average college football player; he is a unique person, in multiple ways. There are 5 categories that stand out as I describe his life story to you.

DIVERSITY

Race has never played an issue in David’s life. Out of any household that I’ve heard of, his would probably be the most DIVERSE! David comes from an African-American father, along with his mother (who he has lived with the majority of his life) that is mixed with African-American and Caucasian. David’s step-father is Greek, and he has a 10 year old brother who was born through his mother and step-father as well. You get the point, there are many ethnicities that are a part of him, and also surrounding him.

ADJUSTMENT

Coming out of high school, David was originally recruited for the DB (Safety) position. When he first got up to Northwestern, he was moved to the linebacker position. If you know football, that is a huge ADJUSTMENT! Those are two totally different positions with two different responsibilities. Also, keep in mind, David had never played Linebacker in his life, so this was brand new to him. He did well at that position, and now, he’s back at the Safety position for this upcoming 2010-2011 season and is already a preseason pick to achieve ALL Big Ten honors.

ADVERSITY

For anyone who has had a sports injury, one thing everyone has in common is the rehab process, and the simple fact of going through the pain and struggle. Well for David, he has had 4 knee surgeries!!!! He has torn his meniscus in both of his knees. Despite the knee surgeries, David has still been able to overcome all of the pain, struggle, and health issues. And now he is one of the Big Ten’s most watched Defensive Backs. If you ask me, that’s the definition of ADVERSITY!

FOCUS

Everyone has something that makes them stand out from others. Your FOCUS may be different than someone else’s focus! David has developed certain pre-game rituals that he has carried with him for years. He said “It has a lot to do with the pre-game schedule that the hotel goes through every week. Starting when we get to the locker room I like to sit down and listen to music and look through the program for that week”.
Something that I thought was extremely unique about David when he told me, “One thing that has been a pre-game ritual for him is to not brush my teeth.” He said it started a while back when he was rushing for a game and he had to hurry up and get all his stuff together to go out on the field and he did not have enough time to brush his teeth. So he ended up playing really well that game, and it became a part of his routine ever since!

VISION

David is majoring in Learning and Organizational Change. He felt that it was the closest alternative to business and the future vision he has planned with his life. I asked David where he saw himself in 5 years, and he told me “playing in the NFL”. But he doesn’t just have a dream to play in the NFL and call it quits after that. David would like to start some type of organization and help others as well. He told me “I want to be a successful businessman who is happy and is able to give as much back to my community as possible.” That is my definition of having a true VISION!

FOOTBALL

I then asked David how football has helped him become who he is today, and he said “It has been a huge part of his life, in so many different ways.” He then went on to say “football has taught him things he can apply to other aspects of his life and it has built character and leadership for him also.”
David’s favorite quote sums up everything about him; “Life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity".

LeBron James Skills Academy

Me being born and raised in Akron, OH, I can truly say that everything Bron has done for our city has been GREAT! Haters Anyone???

Do any of you have haters out there?? Trust me, I hear you… I know exactly what you’re saying, so do I; WE ALL DO!! However, as many haters and critics we may have in our lives, you have to love them! Without them, we may not be where we currently are; they push us to become better! From being told that he was “too small” and “wasn’t ready for the physical nature of the game” on the big Division I stage, Lehigh College’s basketball prodigy, C.J. McCollum, has done, as rap artist Drake would say, pointed all the skeptics out and made them into believers!

The majority of you probably haven’t heard of Lehigh College… However, you might have heard of them if you followed the NCAA March Madness Tournament this past year. Lehigh was the #16 seed that played #1 ranked Kansas in the first round. Unfortunately, Lehigh was unable to pull out the victory, but C.J. was able to say that the ended season had been really good to him! After having one of the best seasons any freshman in the country could ever wish for, C.J. realizes that choosing Lehigh College was the perfect decision! The same guard that was told he was “too small” and “not ready for the physical nature of the game”, proved everyone wrong and had an outstanding year receiving: Patriot League Player of the year, Patriot League Freshman of the year, Freshman All-American, Honorable Mention All-American, Rivals.com Freshman All-America Second Team, not to even mention the other awards and multiple school records that were broken along the way as well. So you get the point, with literally collecting almost every award you could think of, C.J.’s hard work on and off the court has truly paid off for him.

After being offered to attend LeBron’s Skills Academy in San Diego this summer, C.J. actually had to turn down the offer due to him being selected by Athletes in Action which is a Christian Organization; to go to China for 2 weeks with a group of American basketball players to play against China’s National team, workout, and also hold bible studies; that shows his character!

Although it may seem like he has everything going on for him when it comes to basketball, (which he does), the craziest thing that I notice about C.J. isn’t his basketball ability; it’s the simple fact of how humble he really is! Anyone could achieve all the success that he’s accomplished within 1 year and easily decide to get cocky and arrogant. Right? Along with success there comes a lot of exposure and opportunity that the average person cannot handle. However with C.J., that’s not the case… It’s nothing different to him! He still is striving to be the best basketball player and person he can be and still trying to reach more of his goals as he continues the journey. With the ultimate goal of going to the NBA, C.J. also said he could definitely see himself becoming a sports broadcaster somewhere down the road.

Here’s something else you can’t forget! For this upcoming 2010-2011 season, C.J. has already been named to the Rivals.com Sophomore All-America First Team as well as the Non-Conference BCS Players to Watch List by Sports Illustrated.. So the credentials speak for themselves! I don’t even need to say this, but I will anyways… C.J. McCollum; REMEMBER THE NAME!!!!

My entire family is very proud of me, although not all of them like the fact of me
